A promising 21-year-old college hockey captain, Ryan O’Shea, who harbored dreams of joining the NYPD and later the DEA, was tragically killed in a fatal wrong-way collision on Interstate 91 in North Haven, Connecticut. The crash involved Guillermo Carmona-Lopez, a 31-year-old Mexican national who, according to the Department of Homeland Security, had illegally entered the U.S. multiple times after prior removals and a final order of deportation in May 2013. O’Shea, a senior at the University of New Haven studying criminal justice and serving as captain of the men’s club hockey team, was driving southbound when Carmona-Lopez, traveling the wrong way in a Chevrolet Silverado, slammed head-on into his vehicle. O’Shea, who had interned with the NYPD over the summer, was pronounced dead at the scene. Carmona-Lopez sustained life-threatening injuries, while three others were also injured. DHS confirmed Carmona-Lopez was initially arrested by Border Patrol in May 2013 after an illegal entry, expeditedly removed, and then illegally re-entered the country shortly thereafter, receiving a final order of removal that same month. The investigation into the crash, which also involved two other vehicles striking O’Shea’s car after the initial impact, is ongoing.
