Oregon Teacher Breaks Silence After Wrestling Shotgun From School Gunman, Carrying ‘Pain of Loss Forever’

Cassidy Schutz, a learning specialist at Silver Rail Elementary School, has shared her profound grief and trauma following the horrific school shooting that claimed four lives, including a fellow teacher and three young students. In a statement released through Bend-La Pine Schools, Schutz described the tragedy not as a story, but as a devastating reality that has left an indelible mark. “There are no words to describe the depth of sadness I am feeling following the events of October 15th,” Schutz stated, her voice heavy with emotion. “This is not a story. This is a horrific and heartbreaking tragedy, and it is our real lives.” She expressed deep empathy for the victims, their families, and all those affected by the violence, lamenting the speed at which events unfolded and the wish for more time to prevent the loss. “My thoughts are with those who were lost, their families, those who were hurt, and those who were there that day. My heart is with you. It all happened so fast, and I wish with everything in me that we had more time. The pain of this loss I will carry with me forever.” Schutz, who was credited by Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz with bravely throwing her cellphone at the shooter and engaging him in a struggle for control of his shotgun, is now seeking privacy to heal. “There are no words for this unimaginable reality we are facing. My focus is on these families, our team, our school, and my own healing,” she concluded, requesting the space needed to navigate her recovery without further public statements.
