Man Apprehended at Miami Airport with 10 Live Birds Concealed Under His Clothing

A routine customs inspection at Miami International Airport took a bizarre turn when U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers discovered an astonishing secret hidden on a passenger arriving from Havana, Cuba. Alert officers noticed an “unexplained bulge” around the traveler’s waist and pelvic area, prompting a secondary inspection that led to the shocking discovery of 10 live birds concealed beneath his clothing. Alberto Hernandez Castillo, a legal permanent resident of the U.S., initially declared he was not bringing any animals into the country. However, during questioning, his nervousness and the visible bulge led to a pat-down, revealing six clear cylindrical containers, taped and tucked into specially sewn pockets in his underwear. The containers held eight yellow-faced grassquits and two blue grosbeaks, identified by authorities. When questioned, Castillo cryptically stated the birds were for his “personal use” before invoking his right to remain silent. Investigators found no record of Castillo filing the necessary documentation for importing wildlife, leading to his arrest and charge of smuggling goods into the United States. He was released on a $25,000 bond and is due back in court on October 26th.
