Urgent Travel Warning for Djerba Issued Ahead of Oct. 7 Anniversary

U.S. officials have issued an urgent warning for Americans to avoid the popular Tunisian island of Djerba, a major tourist destination renowned for its beaches and resorts, due to heightened security concerns surrounding the anniversary of the October 7th terrorist attacks on Israel. The U.S. Embassy in Tunisia specifically advised against travel to Djerba on or around October 7th, urging visitors to steer clear of crowds, remain alert, be aware of their surroundings, avoid areas with a heavy police presence, monitor local media, and maintain a low profile. This advisory comes as the anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attacks, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and thousands injured, approaches, potentially exacerbating global antisemitism and posing a risk to the island’s significant and historic Jewish community, which has a settlement history dating back nearly 2,000 years. While Djerba itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tunisia as a whole is under a Level 2 “Exercise Increased Caution” advisory due to common petty crime and the possibility of violent crime, with border regions with Libya and Algeria designated Level 4 “Do Not Travel” due to terrorism concerns. The State Department explicitly states that terrorist groups continue to plot attacks in Tunisia and may strike without warning, making vigilance essential for any travelers in the region.
