His family has expressed outrage, highlighting Ortega’s extensive criminal record in Texas, including multiple arrests for driving while intoxicated and failure to appear in court, leading to active warrants that they believe should have resulted in his deportation before the shooting. Friesenhahn’s sister, Becky Borjon, stated that while they hope he can still testify, his current health downturn has forced him back into the hospital, impacting the trial’s proceedings and casting a shadow over their hope for justice and Friesenhahn’s lifelong recovery, which they acknowledge is unlikely given the severity of his injuries.
