House Speaker Mike Johnson has been accused by Rep. Thomas Massie of strategically adjourning the House early to prevent a vote on articles of impeachment filed against Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth. Massie submitted eight impeachment articles, which under House rules, would have required consideration by the following day. However, Johnson’s decision to send the House home that day, and not reconvene until after the mid-November midterms, effectively stalled the process. Massie argues this move was designed to circumvent a vote that would have forced Republicans into a difficult position. Typically, such articles would be met with a “motion to table,” an attempt to kill the impeachment articles without a direct vote on their merits. If this motion to table failed, the House would then be compelled to vote on the actual impeachment resolutions, a scenario Massie believes some members would not survive. By adjourning, Johnson allegedly prevented this potentially damaging vote, allowing members to avoid taking a stance on Hegseth’s impeachment.
