Brian Romero, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 34th Assembly District and a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, is facing intense scrutiny after launching and quickly deleting a GoFundMe campaign to cover his rent and grocery bills. Romero, who is poised to win the heavily Democratic district in November and assume a $142,000 annual salary plus per diem payments, had sought $2,000 to cover living expenses while transitioning to office. He explained that he left his position as a senior adviser to State Senator Kristen Gonzalez after becoming a candidate, depleted his savings while seeking consulting work, and was ineligible for unemployment benefits. The fundraising appeal, which had already garnered over $1,000 before being taken down, drew sharp criticism given his imminent substantial income and the fact that he lives with his partner in a Jackson Heights apartment with a reported $2,600 monthly rent. Romero later described the fundraiser as a “mistake” and stated that close friends had offered to provide financial assistance directly, assuring that none of the donated funds were kept.
