Despite invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination 111 times during a recent Senate hearing, Dr. Anthony Fauci is now facing potential legal challenges at the state level, as officials in Alabama and Florida have announced investigations into his role in the COVID-19 response. Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is campaigning for Alabama governor, has vowed to pursue state charges against Fauci, asserting that President Biden’s pardon only covers federal offenses and cannot shield him from state prosecution. Tuberville, who believes Fauci is responsible for millions of deaths, stated that if state prosecutors cannot imprison Fauci, he would support extensive litigation to hold him accountable for the harm caused. Similarly, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier confirmed that his office is investigating all potential violations of Florida law related to Fauci’s conduct during the pandemic, focusing on what he knew, when he knew it, and how he may have misled the public. Lt. Governor Jay Collins of Florida also voiced strong support for the probe, citing personal hardships and broader economic damage attributed to Fauci’s pandemic policies. In California, the Republican gubernatorial nominee, Steve Hilton, has also proposed a COVID Accountability Commission to examine the actions of Fauci and state officials regarding pandemic policies.
