A second U.S. citizen working for a humanitarian organization in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has tested positive for Bundibugyo virus, a type of Ebola, the CDC confirmed, amplifying concerns amid the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded in Africa. This alarming development follows the recovery of another American, Dr. Peter Stafford, who was evacuated in May but has since returned to the U.S. after testing negative. The current outbreak in Congo has seen 1,830 confirmed cases and 648 deaths, with cases also reported in Uganda, and the Bundibugyo virus notably lacks an approved vaccine or treatment, heightening the public health crisis. The CDC is actively engaged in supporting contact tracing and risk assessments in the DRC to prevent further transmission, while international efforts continue to contain the devastating epidemic.
