Halloween Candy Prices Skyrocket, Yet Americans Still Poised to Spend Billions

Despite a significant surge in candy prices, outpacing overall inflation by more than double, Americans are resolute in their Halloween spending plans, projecting a staggering $4.1 billion on sweets alone as part of a record $13.5 billion total Halloween expenditure. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals candy prices have climbed 7.7% year-over-year, a trend that, while making affordability a key consideration, has not deterred consumers from prioritizing Halloween treats. The National Retail Federation reports that 96% of shoppers intend to purchase candy, with many planning strategic moves like comparison shopping (31%) and hunting for coupons or sales (26%) to manage rising costs. Retailers are responding by offering a diverse range of products and price points, while industry experts note a shift in consumer behavior, including earlier purchasing and more careful evaluation of items, to accommodate Halloween within tighter budgets influenced by increased expenses in housing, transportation, and other essentials. This resilience was evident last year, where confectionery sales grew 7.6% despite a 2.5% drop in unit sales, indicating consumers are willing to spend more per item, particularly for chocolate which saw an 11.5% average unit-price increase, to preserve the tradition.
