TSA Issues Halloween Costume Warning: Avoid Airport Security Delays

Travelers planning to fly in costume this Halloween should be aware that certain costume elements could trigger significant delays at airport security checkpoints. The TSA advises that while costumes are generally permitted, accessories, masks, heavy makeup, and metal components can cause issues. Elaborate face coverings or heavy costume makeup may require removal if facial recognition technology, increasingly used at airports, cannot verify a traveler’s identity. Furthermore, costume props packed in luggage can raise concerns if they resemble weapons; replica explosives, fake knives, swords, guns, and pitchforks are prohibited in carry-on bags and may require placement in checked luggage. Even seemingly innocuous metal-heavy costumes can trigger screening equipment, leading to additional checks and slowdowns. Standard TSA liquid restrictions also apply to makeup, with containers generally limited to 3.4 ounces in carry-ons. To avoid potential problems, the TSA strongly recommends packing all costume elements, including accessories and props, in checked luggage rather than wearing them through security.
