Mast recounted a harrowing video shown to the delegation depicting the torture and murder of a heavy machinery operator who aided police in clearing street blockages; the man was kidnapped with his family, surrendered himself, and was then brutally killed, his ears severed and fed to him before being hacked with machetes, a graphic testament to the gangs’ barbarity. Adding to the terror, Mast revealed a separate incident involving the kidnapping of a 6-year-old American citizen girl by a local gang, who suffered health issues suggesting sexual assault, though she was eventually released after 46 days following ransom negotiations. Mast criticized Haitian politicians for rampant corruption and pillaging their nation, which he believes fueled the gangs’ rise, and suggested that deporting Haitians with Temporary Protected Status back to Haiti could bolster the decimated police and military forces, potentially aiding in restoring order to the violence-plagued Caribbean nation.
