This intensified security follows intelligence from Morocco’s Interior Ministry detecting anonymous online publications encouraging collective illegal crossings into Ceuta and Melilla, which they deem dangerous and criminalized acts intended to instrumentalize migration. Morocco has reportedly arrested individuals circulating these messages and is urging Spain to continue repatriating the remaining Moroccan migrants, approximately 5,000 of whom are still in Ceuta after the initial event saw over 70,000 people cross. Spain has been processing asylum claims, rejecting most, and has implemented physical deterrents like floating barriers in the waters previously used for crossings, a backdrop to the tragedy that saw at least 96 deaths during the July surge.
