President Seneca argued that Trump’s action, enacted amid a trade dispute with Canada, turns a vital natural resource into a “political pawn,” violating the spirit of peace and friendship established by the 1794 Canandaigua Treaty, which the U.S. Constitution upholds as supreme law. This executive order, he stated, disregards long-standing commitments to Indigenous nations and erases their cultural identity, a move that has also drawn criticism from Canadian officials and several U.S. governors, with one congresswoman vowing to introduce legislation to nullify the change, asserting that “Canada is not our enemy.
