Prosecutors are aggressively pushing for a trial in the Charlie Kirk assassination case, arguing that the evidence against accused gunman Tyler Robinson is overwhelmingly clear and easily meets the probable cause standard. In a recent filing, prosecutors declared the bindover decision likely the most straightforward the court will encounter, citing Robinson’s alleged confessions to friends, including his roommate and romantic partner, admitting he assassinated Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, in front of thousands of witnesses, shortly before surrendering to law enforcement. Beyond these admissions, the prosecution points to a trove of corroborating evidence, including surveillance video tracking Robinson’s movements before and after the shooting, DNA found on the suspected murder weapon, a cartridge casing, and a towel, as well as eyewitness testimony placing him on the rooftop overlooking the event. Robinson allegedly confessed to his former roommate, Lance Twiggs, stating, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it,” and further admitted to planning the assassination for over a week. Prosecutors contend this evidence, combined with the alleged intentional targeting of Kirk and the endangerment of bystanders, leaves little doubt that Robinson should face trial on all seven counts, including aggravated murder for which they are seeking the death penalty. The defense is expected to file its opposition soon, with oral arguments scheduled for September 1.
