Portland Teen Charged with Domestic Terrorism and Attempted Murder After School Cafeteria Chemical Attack

A shocking escalation has occurred in Portland, Oregon, where a 15-year-old Benson Polytechnic High School student, initially the victim of a chemical scare in the school cafeteria, now faces a severe barrage of 19 criminal charges including domestic terrorism and attempted murder. Authorities allege the student brought chemicals from home and intentionally mixed them on school grounds, releasing toxic gases that critically endangered students and staff on September 8th. This incident, which saw the teen rushed to the hospital in critical condition, has been deemed a deliberate act, with investigators uncovering prior concerning behaviors and statements from the student related to hazardous chemicals, explosives, and violence. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s office is seeking to move the case from juvenile to adult court, emphasizing the severity of the charges and the need to ensure community safety, while also criticizing the limitations of Oregon’s juvenile justice system in addressing long-term public threats. The attack, which occurred just before 8:30 a.m., necessitated the evacuation and medical assessment of over 100 students and staff, with at least seven requiring further care. Initial testing suggested the presence of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, with further analysis pending from an FBI laboratory. The teen’s legal representation has denied the allegations, stating he is undergoing treatment at an inpatient mental health facility.
