In a move mirroring President Trump’s recent executive order to rename Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America,’ Pennsylvania state Rep. David Maloney has put forth a resolution urging Trump, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and congressional leaders to rename Lake Erie as ‘Lake Pennsylvania.’ Maloney argues that this change is essential to acknowledge the lake’s ‘modern identity’ and its significant connection to the state, emphasizing that it is Pennsylvania’s sole Great Lake, vital for its economy, tourism, and recreation. He pointed out that other bordering states and Canada have more access to the Great Lakes, stating, ‘Ohio has plenty of shoreline. New York already has two Great Lakes. Canada has four others. Pennsylvania has one. Let’s call it Lake Pennsylvania!’ This proposal follows Trump’s executive order, which, while only binding for the U.S. federal government, has seen mapping services like Apple Maps and Google Maps update their U.S. interfaces to reflect ‘Lake America’ and the ‘Gulf of America,’ despite international rejection and mockery, including by Canadian officials and the creators of ‘South Park.’ The president has also previously floated renaming New Mexico to ‘New America’ and even the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, signaling a broader pattern of rebranding geographical features to align with nationalistic sentiment.
