An NYPD detective, who was brutally attacked and stabbed seven times by two illegal immigrants during an attempted robbery in the Bronx, has been released from the hospital and is recovering, offering a hopeful update on his condition. Detective Jose Mercedes, a 10-year veteran of the force, was off-duty and cleaning his car when the suspects allegedly ambushed him, attempting to steal his gold chain. Despite fighting back, Detective Mercedes sustained at least seven stab wounds to his neck and leg before the assailants ripped the chain from his neck and fled on a motorized bike. Video captured the detective bloodied as he was transported to the hospital, where he remained for several days before his release, met by a supportive crowd of fellow officers. The alleged attackers, identified as D’Angelo Caraballo and Sneider Mejia, both illegal migrants from the Dominican Republic with alleged extensive criminal histories, were apprehended in Massachusetts and now face attempted murder charges, with both ordered held without bail.
