Dramatic video captured the moment Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini, a Republican, lunged at resident Michael Sawka during a volatile council meeting Wednesday night, shouting “I’m getting you” before being physically restrained by others. The confrontation, which occurred while a recently fired township employee was speaking, escalated rapidly after Bianchini’s family reportedly claimed Sawka and another resident made offensive remarks towards the mayor’s wife and daughter. Although Bianchini later admitted he “basically snapped” and acknowledged his conduct was inappropriate, he also stated, “Don’t attack my family,” and controversially added, “Was it wrong? Absolutely. Was it justified? Absolutely. And I would do it again if I had to.” Sawka, a vocal critic of the mayor, denies making any remarks toward Bianchini’s family and claims he remained seated and calm throughout the incident. Following the explosive encounter, Sawka filed a municipal court complaint seeking assault and terroristic threats charges against the mayor, while the Pemberton Township Democratic Club called for professional leadership and urged residents to participate in the upcoming election where Bianchini is seeking re-election.
