Gladys Adaeze Okafor, a 56-year-old Nigerian national residing in Massachusetts as a lawful permanent resident, has been charged by the Justice Department with illegally voting in at least two federal elections, including the 2024 presidential primary and the 2022 midterm elections. Prosecutors allege that Okafor repeatedly falsified her citizenship status on official voter registration documents, swearing under penalty of perjury that she was a U.S. citizen, despite not being one and not having applied for citizenship. She obtained lawful permanent resident status in December 2022. Okafor is expected to appear in a Boston federal courtroom, facing potential penalties of up to one year in prison and a $10,000 fine, in a case that follows recent indictments of noncitizens for alleged election violations in Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Wisconsin.
