Midwest Hub Claims Top Mega Airport Title for Third Consecutive Year, Outshining NYC and LA

For the third year running, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport has been crowned the best mega airport in North America, a prestigious title it has held onto despite the presence of major hubs serving New York and Los Angeles. This consistent win, according to the latest J.D. Power 2026 North America Airport Satisfaction Study, highlights a Midwestern powerhouse that continues to impress travelers with its efficiency and amenities. Travel industry expert Gary Leff notes that Minneapolis excels by offering connecting passengers ample amenities without requiring them to leave secure areas, while local travelers benefit from convenient light rail access to the city. Despite potential long walks between gates, the airport’s overall experience, scoring 684 out of 1,000 points, has kept it ahead of competitors like Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (663 points) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (642 points). This success underscores the study’s findings that improvements in ease of travel, clear signage, and navigation are key drivers of passenger satisfaction, with even newly renovated, albeit complex, terminals like New York LaGuardia’s Central Terminal failing to capture the top spot. The study also recognized Tampa International Airport and Charleston International Airport for their excellence in the large and medium airport categories, respectively, with all top-ranked airports having recently completed or nearing completion of significant capital improvement projects, proving that strategic investment and efficient design are paramount in delivering a superior airport experience.
