Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has sharply criticized New York City Mayor Eric Adams, accusing him of “sowing chaos” ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming appearance at the UN General Assembly. Danon’s strong words come in response to Mayor Adams’ July call for New Yorkers to protest Netanyahu’s arrival on September 24th. “Instead of actually welcoming all world leaders and making sure that the city will function properly, he is doing exactly the opposite,” Danon stated, asserting that Adams is “inciting” and creating disorder. The ambassador emphasized that such protests would not deter Netanyahu, who will come to speak and represent his nation. This exchange highlights a significant diplomatic tension, particularly as Mayor Adams previously labeled Netanyahu a “war criminal” and “architect of a horrific genocide,” despite acknowledging his inability to enforce an ICC arrest warrant. Mayor Adams, when asked in July about what frustrated New Yorkers should do upon Netanyahu’s arrival, stated, “One of the bedrocks of our city is protest,” and affirmed that New York City would always be a place to exercise First Amendment rights. Prime Minister Netanyahu himself has vowed to visit New York, telling Fox News, “I’m going to speak the truth in front of this hate-spewing elected official who’s pitting one group of New Yorkers against the others.” Ambassador Danon also touched upon Israel’s ongoing conflict, stressing the need to “finish the job” in Gaza by disarming Hamas, warning that Israel would act if necessary, as a future without Hamas in power is essential for both Gaza and Israel. He expressed pride in Israel’s achievements in fighting against entities like Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas, framing it as a fight for Western societies and democracies.
