IndyCar Takes Over D.C.: Freedom 250 Grand Prix Transforms National Mall into Unprecedented Race Circuit

In a historic and ambitious move, the NTT IndyCar Series is set to host the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, transforming the heart of Washington D.C. into a high-octane race circuit. This unprecedented event, born from a January executive order by President Trump and integrated into the America 250 celebrations, features a unique 7-corner street course weaving through the National Mall, offering iconic views of the U.S. Capitol and utilizing Pennsylvania Avenue for the pit lane and start-finish straight. Despite a compressed timeline and the logistical challenges of staging a major motorsport event in the nation’s capital, organizers have established a functional paddock along Constitution Ave. NW and 7th Street, allowing teams to tow cars directly to pit lane. Adding to the spectacle, the revived International Race of Champions (IROC) series will feature legendary drivers from NASCAR and IndyCar, including Jeff Gordon, Bill Elliott, Tony Kanaan, and Helio Castroneves, competing in identical Pontiac Firebirds. While premium tickets remain, general admission was free and quickly snapped up, with organizers anticipating crowds of up to 140,000 attendees daily for the weekend’s practice, qualifying, and the main race, which will be broadcast on FOX.
