The bodies of an Illinois couple, both 20 years old, have been recovered from Lake Michigan near the treacherous strait known as “Death’s Door,” a notorious stretch of water infamous for its history of shipwrecks dating back to the 19th century. David Thalman and Francesca Warick went missing over the weekend during a kayaking excursion towards Washington Island, a journey that requires crossing this turbulent strait. Authorities confirmed their recovery on Monday morning off Washington Island, with the Door County Sheriff’s Office leading the recovery operation after the search transitioned from a rescue mission. Neither Thalman nor Warick were believed to have been wearing life jackets. Jane Lee, Thalman’s employer in a Chicago suburb, described him as a dedicated and trustworthy employee, expressing shock and grief over his loss, noting his family’s connection to Washington Island. Warick was remembered in her obituary as a joyful, bright, and free-spirited young woman who cherished her family. The couple’s deaths, presumed to be from drowning, are currently under investigation.
