Ilhan Omar Hires Elite Legal Team Amid Federal Investigations

Embattled Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has enlisted the formidable legal expertise of Amy Jeffress and Joshua Matz, partners at Hecker Fink LLP, as she faces two significant federal investigations concerning alleged immigration fraud and financial disclosure discrepancies. Both attorneys bring a wealth of experience representing high-profile Democratic figures and challenging administrations, including a notable history of taking on cases targeting former President Donald Trump and his allies. Jeffress, a former federal prosecutor and Department of Justice Attaché, previously served as counsel for President Joe Biden in his lawsuit against the DOJ to prevent the release of audio recordings related to the Robert Hur investigation, and also represented the House January 6 committee and former FBI attorney Lisa Page. Matz, a Harvard Law graduate who clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy, has a strong background in democracy and elections law, having defended Pennsylvania’s election results before the Supreme Court and represented House Democrats in impeachment proceedings against Trump. He also notably represented E. Jean Carroll in her civil cases against Trump and advocated for students and teachers opposing Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Act, as well as Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear in a lawsuit over COVID-19 lockdowns. The hiring of such high-caliber attorneys underscores the seriousness of the probes Omar is facing, prompting her to appeal to supporters for financial assistance to cover the mounting legal costs.
