The controversy centers on allegations that ActBlue’s verification processes for donors, particularly those with international ties, are inadequate, despite the company’s claims of recent improvements. New findings suggest that ActBlue employees may have approved donations despite internal “red flags” and questionable donor information, including one instance where a supervisor noted a donor’s IP address was in Hong Kong but deemed it acceptable. Another internal communication revealed an employee questioning a denied contribution, stating, “It is a foreign contribution, but the name/email match, the IP/billing match, a full address with the correct country code, and there were previously accepted and successful contributions.” This comes as multiple House committees, including Oversight, Administration, and Judiciary, continue their aggressive oversight, with Chairman Bryan Steil of the Committee on House Administration highlighting ActBlue’s admission of a passport verification process that “did not actually verify or check entries against any government database.” The probe has been further complicated by the fact that ten ActBlue employees and board members, including co-founder Matt DeBergalis, invoked their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during closed-door depositions, and CEO Regina Wallace-Jones also pleaded the Fifth during a public hearing, leaving Republicans frustrated and vowing to pursue further avenues to uncover the truth about ActBlue’s practices.
