Chaos erupted at a massive, unsanctioned party in rural Morgan Hill, California, Saturday night when gunfire tore through the crowd of over 300 attendees, resulting in one fatality and six injuries. The gathering, promoted on social media, devolved into panic shortly after 10 p.m. when deputies, initially responding to reports of intoxicated individuals and property damage, arrived to find a scene of terror. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by responding deputies before the arrival of medical personnel, one individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while multiple others sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals. Authorities believe a handgun was used, and while no suspects have been identified, homicide detectives are treating the shooting as an isolated incident, warning that the investigation is expected to be extensive. Sheriff Robert Jonsen condemned the “tragic and senseless violence,” vowing to apprehend those responsible for the “horrific act” and expressing condolences to the victim’s family and those injured.
