GOP Rep. Massie Unveils 8 Articles of Impeachment Against War Secretary Hegseth

Representative Thomas Massie, R-Ky., has dramatically escalated the political conflict by introducing a resolution to impeach War Secretary Pete Hegseth, laying out eight distinct articles of impeachment on the House floor. The core of Massie’s accusation centers on alleged violations of the War Powers Resolution of 1973, with the first three articles asserting that Hegseth’s Department of War has been engaged in hostilities in Iran without a declaration of war, statutory authorization, or any imminent threat to the United States, arguing that the conflict was unlawful from its inception and that Hegseth defied congressional directives to remove troops, continuing hostilities beyond the resolution’s termination period. Further articles accuse Hegseth of failing to minimize civilian casualties and engaging in extrajudicial killing, specifically by allegedly substituting maritime law enforcement with unauthorized lethal military targeting of suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean. Massie also charges Hegseth with the ‘Kidnapping of a Sovereign Foreign Leader’ for his role in the operation that led to the apprehension of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, claiming this was done without constitutional or legal authority. Additionally, Hegseth is accused of suppressing free speech by retaliating against Senator Mark Kelly for statements made by the senator and his colleagues. The final article targets Hegseth for initiating an operation in Yemen without congressional authorization or an imminent threat, violating war powers reporting requirements, and causing extensive civilian deaths and unlawful strikes. Massie concluded his presentation by stating that Hegseth has abused his powers, subordinated constitutional limits to his policy objectives, and poses a threat to civilians, military operations, the armed forces, and the Constitution, thus warranting impeachment, trial, and removal from office.
