Tragedy struck at Skydive Elsinore in Southern California on Friday when two experienced skydivers, 56-year-old Georgia Jean and 29-year-old Levi Pimentel, died following a midair collision that entangled their parachutes at approximately 150 feet above the ground. Both licensed skydivers were participating in an organized dive when the incident occurred around noon in Lake Elsinore. While the freefall and parachute deployments were reportedly normal, the collision in the final descent led to their parachutes becoming inextricably linked. This entanglement resulted in critical injuries upon impact with the ground. Jean, a resident of Box Elder, S.D., had completed over 1,700 jumps, while Pimentel, from Aurora, Ill., was a lead skydiving instructor at iFLY Naperville. Both were transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the fatal incident.
