DOJ Threatens Legal Action Over Suspected Noncitizen Voters in California

The Department of Justice has issued a stern warning to California election officials, demanding immediate action to prevent suspected noncitizens from casting ballots in the upcoming November elections. A 48-hour deadline was set for California Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan to review voter rolls and segregate any ballots from individuals whose citizenship cannot be verified. The DOJ cited federal law prohibiting noncitizens from voting in federal elections and stated it would pursue emergency legal relief if the demands were not met by Thursday at noon Eastern. This action follows the identification of thousands of potential noncitizens on voter rolls across the state. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, however, has pushed back, denouncing the DOJ’s allegations as a baseless conspiracy theory aimed at voter intimidation and asserting that widespread voter fraud does not exist. Meanwhile, Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan expressed cybersecurity concerns regarding a USB drive purportedly containing voter records, stating it has not been accessed due to security protocols and a lack of specific information.
