Democrat Talarico Lauded ‘Irreplaceable’ Group That Bailed Out Suspected Mass Murderer

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico has publicly stated he is “honored” to receive the endorsement of the Texas Organizing Project (TOP), an organization he described as having “irreplaceable” infrastructure, despite TOP’s previous operation of a charitable bail fund that secured the release of Shane James. James, who was bailed out by TOP in March 2022 while facing misdemeanor family-assault charges, was later accused of a chilling six-person killing spree across San Antonio and Austin, including the murder of his own parents, after cutting off his court-ordered GPS monitor and remaining free for 21 months despite multiple arrest warrants. TOP acknowledged its role in James’s release, stating that bail organizations cannot predict future behavior and that James had passed their screening process based on the charges at the time, later announcing an internal review of their program. Talarico, who is challenging Republican Ken Paxton, enthusiastically welcomed TOP’s endorsement in May, praising their 15-year history of building relationships in Black and Latino communities. This endorsement comes amid scrutiny of TOP’s bail program, with a recent investigation revealing that nearly 30% of defendants bailed out by the organization in Bexar County since October 2022 were rearrested, some facing new criminal charges, including a convicted felon previously released by TOP who was later arrested for new burglary offenses. Talarico’s campaign has defended his record, pointing to his later votes supporting bail reform packages and stricter bail conditions, while also criticizing his opponent for lenient plea deals.
