The controversy stems from reports that Martin Kao, a former defense contractor CEO with a history of fraud, informed the FBI that his company funneled $150,000 through a shell company to a super PAC supporting Collins’ 2020 reelection, allegedly as part of a quid pro quo for government contracts. Collins has vehemently dismissed Kao’s credibility, labeling him a ‘convicted liar’ due to his prior convictions for money laundering and bank fraud. She has also accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of orchestrating a ‘political hit job’ timed to impact her crucial re-election campaign, which could determine Senate control. While an FBI spokesman stated the agency previously found no evidence implicating Collins or her campaign years ago, ProPublica reports a new investigation was launched in 2024 after Kao’s extensive cooperation with federal agents. Collins maintains her office and campaign were cleared of these allegations five years ago and expresses deep offense at the ‘smear job,’ particularly given her commitment to integrity.
