During Seattle’s bustling Seafair festival, UC Davis Division I water polo player Lillie Vehling’s quick thinking and athletic prowess saved three girls from a near-fatal drowning incident in Lake Washington. Spotting the girls struggling desperately near Genesee Park, Vehling, who was attending to watch the Blue Angels, immediately recognized the dire situation as one girl was actively drowning the others in her struggle for air. Without hesitation, she plunged into the water, employing her considerable swimming skills to first rescue the girl who was causing the others to drown, then the second swimmer, and finally the third, who had become submerged and unconscious. Vehling managed to bring the third girl to shore, where she coughed up water and regained consciousness. The heroic act earned Vehling recognition from Seafair, where she was honored as royalty and given a special opportunity to meet the Blue Angels, a lifelong admiration.
