Charity Scammers Target Chicago Diners, Stealing Valuables Under the Guise of Fundraising

Chicago diners are on high alert as a brazen theft ring, posing as charity workers, has targeted multiple restaurants and coffee shops across the city. Between October 7th and October 18th, at least eight incidents were reported in the Loop, West Loop, and Near South Side neighborhoods, where suspects used a deceptive tactic to steal wallets, purses, and cellphones. These individuals would approach unsuspecting patrons, engage them in conversation, and then strategically place flyers or newspapers over their belongings. While the victims were distracted, the thieves would discreetly slide the items underneath the paper and make off with the stolen goods. In a disturbing escalation, victims’ credit and debit cards were often used almost immediately at nearby department stores. Surveillance footage has captured some of these brazen acts, including an incident at Meli CafĂ© where an employee intervened, initially detaining one suspect only to discover a second accomplice had also stolen a phone. The perpetrators are described as wearing dark clothing and face coverings, and police have linked a late-model white Buick and a black Mazda sedan to the thefts. Authorities are strongly advising all diners to remain vigilant, secure their valuables, and never leave personal items unattended on tables or counters.
