Authorities have apprehended Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, also known as ‘El R-1,’ the alleged leader of the violent criminal cell Los Rs, a group operating under the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The arrest is a significant development in multiple high-profile cases, including the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo and, crucially, the livestreamed murder of 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Márquez. Officials revealed that Álvarez Ayala allegedly ordered and financed Mayor Manzo’s assassination in November 2025, and new evidence directly links his organization to the brutal killing of Márquez in May 2025. Márquez, a popular TikTok creator, was shot and killed inside her beauty salon while broadcasting live, an incident that shocked many and was initially investigated as a femicide. The investigation has uncovered a disturbing familial connection: Márquez’s former partner, Francisco, is Álvarez Ayala’s son, and authorities believe Francisco, after threatening Márquez following their breakup, enlisted his father to carry out the murder. While Álvarez Ayala is now in custody, Francisco remains at large, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by this cartel cell involved in extortion, murder, and drug trafficking across Michoacán and Jalisco.
