In a series of audacious attempts to smuggle over 200 pounds of marijuana onto commercial flights, smugglers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) employed increasingly strange tactics, including superglue and dryer sheets, only to be thwarted by undercover officers and K-9 units at Orlando International Airport (MCO). Police records reveal two major busts this summer: on May 7, 57.6 pounds of marijuana, vacuum-sealed and wrapped in blankets with dryer sheets to mask its scent, were discovered; and on July 1, a staggering 144.4 pounds were found hidden in suitcases that had been completely glued shut, with luggage tags ripped off in a desperate bid to evade detection. Suspects in their 20s now face felony drug trafficking charges, highlighting the persistent challenge of drug smuggling on domestic routes, even with enhanced security measures, as experts note that while TSA officers don’t specifically search for drugs, their discovery during screening is always referred to law enforcement.
