Americans Warned of Years-Long Detention and Exit Bans in China

U.S. citizens traveling to China face a serious risk of wrongful detention and lengthy exit bans, the State Department is warning, urging travelers to exercise increased caution. The advisory highlights that routine activities common in Western countries could be construed as criminal offenses under China’s broad security laws, potentially leading to years of detention with limited contact from family or U.S. officials. Furthermore, private communications, including emails, texts, and social media posts, may be monitored by Chinese authorities, with some individuals detained or deported for messages deemed critical of the government, even if sent from outside China. Exit bans, used during investigations and disputes, can prevent Americans from leaving the country, sometimes without prior notice until they attempt to depart, with no clear legal recourse. Travel experts advise travelers to minimize personal data on electronic devices, leave confidential information at home, and be mindful of their surroundings, as inadvertent actions like photographing law enforcement or being near protests could trigger these restrictions. The U.S. government recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and maintaining regular check-ins with contacts back home for those planning a trip.
