An American woman in Massachusetts, identified as Jennifer Gonzalez, has been charged by the Department of Justice for allegedly orchestrating a massive marriage fraud scheme that generated an estimated $6 million over the past decade. Prosecutors claim Gonzalez, a U.S. citizen, facilitated sham marriages between her clients seeking green cards and U.S. citizenship and her own employees, charging up to $40,000 per marriage and arranging as many as 20 such unions annually. The scheme involved Gonzalez’s female employees marrying foreign nationals looking to obtain legal status, with some employees reportedly entering into multiple sham marriages after divorcing previous foreign spouses. Gonzalez allegedly bragged about investing her illicit earnings in businesses and property in the Dominican Republic, referring to it as ‘my country.’ Authorities revealed that Gonzalez confided in a cooperating witness, a person she believed to be an undocumented immigrant, expressing her belief that Massachusetts, as a sanctuary state, offered significant assistance to immigrants. She reportedly ceased the phony marriages in late 2024, citing concerns about Donald Trump’s potential return to office and a subsequent increase in immigration enforcement in 2025. In addition to the marriage fraud, prosecutors allege Gonzalez defrauded the SNAP program, receiving over $124,000 between 2019 and 2026 by failing to report her income from the marriage scheme and not disclosing household members, including the foreign national she married and the father of her children. Gonzalez and several co-conspirators, including her secretary and other employees allegedly paid to participate in the marriages, have been arrested, though one is already incarcerated on a gun charge.
