Ex-OpenAI Engineer Charged with Bugging Office Had One-Way Flight to Saudi Arabia Booked, DOJ Reveals

A former OpenAI engineer, Abdulrahman Alfozan, faces federal charges for allegedly planting a recording device in a company conference room, a scheme that was further complicated by the discovery that Alfozan had a one-way flight booked to Saudi Arabia for himself, his wife, and another relative just days after his arrest. Prosecutors cited these travel plans as a key reason for sealing the criminal complaint, fearing Alfozan might flee the country if the information became public. This revelation comes as Alfozan, a Saudi national, had previously spoken on an Arabic podcast about meeting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who had reportedly advised young Saudis in Silicon Valley to gain expertise at top tech firms before returning to their homeland. Alfozan was arrested on October 9th and charged with attempting to intercept oral communications. The encrypted device, disguised within toilet paper, was discovered by OpenAI on September 30th in a conference room used for highly confidential discussions. Security footage reportedly placed Alfozan near the room multiple times, and a chatbot linked to his wife was allegedly used to research methods for installing and concealing recording devices.
