NYC Councilwoman Slams Mayor for Italian Heritage Month Post Praising ‘Communist’ Figure

Queens Councilwoman Vickie Paladino launched a blistering attack on Mayor Zohran Mamdani after he posted a tribute for Italian Heritage Month highlighting Vito Marcantonio, a former congressman with documented ties to the Communist Party and who drew FBI scrutiny during the Cold War. Mamdani’s post on X stated, “Happy Italian Heritage Month, New York. Here’s continuing to fight for Vito Marcantonio’s vision of a government that works for all working people,” referencing Marcantonio’s seven terms in Congress, initially as a Republican and later with the left-wing American Labor Party, and his significant opposition to U.S. involvement in the Korean War. Paladino vehemently condemned Mamdani’s choice, labeling Marcantonio an “obscure Italian-American communist” and accusing the mayor of promoting communist propaganda, questioning why Mamdani would select such a figure from the vast array of notable Italian-Americans. She further asserted that Mamdani was “physically incapable of being anything other than a loathsome propagandist for communism,” contrasting his message with her own family’s history of fighting against Italian forces during WWII and her mother’s struggles as an immigrant raising five children while working in a factory, emphasizing a pride in American identity and values that she felt Mamdani was undermining with his controversial post.
