Violent Tornado Devastates Sicilian City, Injuring Two and Destroying School

A powerful tornado, described as unlike anything seen in living memory, ripped through the popular Sicilian vacation destination of Marsala on Friday, overturning vehicles, causing widespread destruction to buildings including a school, and leaving at least two people seriously injured. Dramatic footage captured the twister swirling through the city, sending debris flying and battering the area with ferocious winds. The tornado’s path of destruction extended to nearby Petrosino and Mazara del Vallo, with downed utility poles littering the streets and cars and trucks lying overturned. Images from a damaged school in Marsala revealed blown-out windows and a partially collapsed ceiling, prompting officials to immediately begin securing funding for repairs. Sicily’s Civil Protection agency highlighted the event as a stark reminder of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events linked to the climate crisis, noting that a recent heat wave had already been flagged as a potential precursor to such severe conditions. This catastrophic event follows a series of dangerous incidents on the Italian island in recent months, including a tourist stranded by volcanic activity and another tragically killed by a lightning strike on Mount Etna.
