South Carolina prosecutors have vehemently rejected Alex Murdaugh’s defense team’s assertion that crucial raw cellphone evidence was withheld, labeling the claim as “manufactured” and “false.” In a new court filing, the state presented over 40 pages of emails, file screenshots, and signed receipts, demonstrating that defense experts received complete, unredacted extractions, password logs, keychain files, and reports from SLED investigators as early as October and November 2022. The state further revealed emails from January 20, 2023, just days before the original trial began, where the defense requested a duplicate copy of Murdaugh’s phone extraction, admitting they had misplaced the original. Prosecutors, in their motion, stated they are “glad to send the cell phone evidence to the defense yet one more time if they have somehow messed up or lost their copies again,” directly contradicting the defense’s narrative of non-disclosure and highlighting their repeated access to the data, even admitting to losing it themselves.
