In a dramatic display of quick thinking and bravery, a group of professional skydivers from Skydive Milwaukee made an extraordinary decision to jump from their own aircraft to reach the scene of a plane crash, becoming the first on-site responders. The skydivers were preparing for a routine jump near East Troy Municipal Airport when they observed a small plane flying erratically before it disappeared behind a line of trees. Realizing they had just witnessed a crash, the skydivers immediately requested their pilot to find a safe drop zone so they could render aid. Given discretion by air traffic control, the pilot deployed several skydivers, who landed near the crash site in a cornfield before emergency services arrived. One of the jumpers, who had a background as a paramedic, provided critical care to a victim with a severe head injury until paramedics could reach them. All four occupants of the crashed plane survived, a fact attributed by skydiver John Bechtel to their perfectly timed presence, stating they wouldn’t have seen the crash if they had left five minutes earlier or been able to assist if they had left fifteen minutes later. This marked the first time Bechtel had ever jumped in response to an emergency, expressing profound gratitude for being able to help those in need.
