Deportation Deal Sends Latin Americans to Liberia: First Flight Arrives Under U.S. Agreement

Liberia has received its inaugural deportation flight from the United States, marking the start of a controversial agreement to accept up to 1,200 foreign nationals over the next year. The first flight, arriving from Louisiana via Senegal, brought nationals primarily from Venezuela, Cuba, and Colombia, individuals who were granted protection in the U.S. from potential torture or abuse in their home countries. Liberian officials emphasized their nation’s historical role as a sanctuary and confirmed that these arrivals are not criminals but guests, with the freedom to depart Liberia or seek asylum. The U.S. has provided $5 million in support for Liberia’s migration management system as part of the deal, which positions Liberia as a significant partner in U.S. deportation agreements across Africa, with similar arrangements in place with other nations including Ghana and Sierra Leone.
