Maryland is on high alert after a third beaver attack in less than three weeks, this time involving a 10-year-old girl bitten on the leg while swimming at Seneca Creek State Park. Camp counselors intervened to save the child from the aggressive animal, which then escaped into the water, prompting park officials to close a section of the park and launch a search for the creature. This latest incident follows two previous attacks at Cunningham Falls State Park where beavers, later confirmed positive for rabies, injured a 13-year-old swimmer and a 19-year-old fisherman who received rabies treatment. While the Seneca Creek attack is not believed to be connected to the earlier incidents due to geographical separation and typical beaver behavior, the escalating number of attacks, particularly involving rabid animals, has raised serious concerns, as such encounters are rare and typically linked to the disease, with the last confirmed rabid beaver bites in Maryland occurring in 2021 and 2015.
