Man Arrested With 200 Lizards Stuffed in Socks at Tokyo Airport

Customs officials at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport apprehended a 23-year-old Mexican man upon his arrival from South Korea, discovering a bizarre and illegal cargo hidden within his luggage: approximately 200 live lizards packed into 22 pairs of socks. Among the reptiles were nine Mexican alligator lizards, an endangered species with strict international trade restrictions. The man reportedly claimed he purchased the lizards in Mexico for a mere $3.50 to $4.70 each, despite their potential resale value in Japan reaching as high as $630 per animal, highlighting the significant financial incentive for such smuggling operations. This incident underscores the lengths to which individuals will go to profit from the exotic pet trade, even at the risk of animal welfare and legal consequences, as one of the lizards was found dead upon discovery.
