A brief escape for 23-year-old Chase Orput ended dramatically on railroad tracks, captured on video by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, just hours after he walked away from an inmate work crew. Orput, who was serving time for misdemeanor drug paraphernalia possession and failure to maintain insurance, was last seen in his striped inmate uniform heading southwest. A coordinated overnight search by the Washoe County and Storey County sheriff’s offices intensified when a tipster spotted Orput near Interstate 80 and alerted the Sparks Police Department. Utilizing a drone for aerial surveillance, officers and deputies were able to pinpoint Orput’s location near mile marker 21. Following medical evaluation, Orput was transported back to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he faces additional escape charges. Sheriff Darin Balaam lauded the swift apprehension as a testament to inter-agency cooperation and the vital role of community vigilance, specifically thanking the citizen whose timely report was instrumental in Orput’s recapture approximately 24 hours after his escape.
