German officials are demanding answers as to why Abdul Ballout, the suspect in the recent deadly attack near a Berlin pride festival, was free to act despite a prior conviction for supporting ISIS. Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed a critical need to understand how such an assault could have been prevented, stating, “We must do everything to protect people in Germany as best possible from such criminals, from dangerous people who for whatever reason can’t be taken into custody.” Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt echoed these concerns, telling public broadcaster ZDF that it was illogical for the 21-year-old, who had a record of backing the Islamic State, to be at large, adding, “You can assume that it certainly would have made sense to put this person in custody.” Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner, while respecting judicial independence, admitted, “words fail me” regarding the circumstances of the attack. Ballout, a German citizen who had previously traveled to Lebanon with the intent of joining ISIS in Syria, is suspected of plowing a van into a crowd and then attacking people with a machete, an act authorities believe was terrorism, resulting in one death and 29 injuries before he was killed by police. Earlier this year, a juvenile court had convicted Ballout of preparing a serious act of violence and publishing ISIS propaganda, sentencing him to a suspended sentence of one year and 10 months in youth custody. However, prosecutors had appealed this decision, seeking a longer, non-probationary sentence and the continuation of an arrest warrant, indicating the legal process was still ongoing at the time of the attack.
