A terrifying near-miss unfolded off the Southern California coast as a 10-foot great white shark was filmed by wildlife photographer Carlos Gauna, known as the “Malibu Artist,” swimming mere feet away from a group of oblivious young swimmers. The drone footage, which Gauna described as one of the few times he felt genuinely uneasy, shows the massive predator circling the children who remained completely unaware of its presence. Adding to the concern, the shark bore a significant boat propeller strike wound across its back and dorsal fin, a visible injury that Gauna believes may have altered its behavior, making it more active and potentially more inclined to investigate humans. He observed the injured shark breach twice in a single day, noting, “Because of the injury, I don’t know if it’s searching for easier prey or if it’s more alert. Either way, this shark does approach humans at a higher frequency.” The viral video ignited widespread discussion online, with many viewers expressing shock and stating they would immediately exit the water if they saw a drone overhead, while others pointed out the shark’s apparent lack of aggressive intent, suggesting it was merely investigating.
