California Governor Commutes All Death Sentences, Releasing Convicted Killers to Life Without Parole

In a sweeping and controversial move, California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered the commutation of all 548 death row inmates, effectively emptying the state’s death row and reclassifying sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Newsom stated his decision, acknowledging it would anger victims’ families and the public, stems from his belief that the death penalty is ethically unenforceable. This commutation applies to some of California’s most heinous criminals, including Richard Allen Davis, who kidnapped and murdered 12-year-old Polly Ann Klaas; Joseph Naso, the ‘Alphabet Killer’ responsible for at least four women’s deaths; Cary Stayner, who murdered four people near Yosemite National Park; Chester Turner, the ‘Southside Slayer’ convicted of 10 murders; Christopher Cheary, who tortured and murdered a 3-year-old girl; Randy Kraft, the ‘Scorecard Killer’ with over 16 confirmed victims; Isauro Aguirre, convicted of torturing and murdering 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez; Charles Ng, responsible for at least 11 murders at ‘The Castle’; David Carpenter, the ‘Trailside Killer’ who murdered at least seven hikers; and Cherie Rhoades, who fatally shot four people. While Newsom’s order commutes the sentences, state law requires the California Supreme Court’s approval for inmates with numerous felony convictions, potentially impacting hundreds of cases.
